The popularity of dating and hookup apps has seen a significant increase in recent years.
In 2015, 91 million people around the world used dating apps, a considerable rise on the 40 million users recorded in 2012.
In an official statement, the Online Dating Association (ODA) responded to the NCA's findings. Even one incident of harm is one too many," George Kidd, ODA Chief Executive, said in a statement.
However, the significant underreporting of sexual assaults in the UK means that the actual number of incidents remains unknown.
According to the NCA's report, only 17% of rapes in the UK are reported to the police.
A recent HM Inspectorate of Constabulary report found that 26% of reported sexual assaults go unrecorded by police.
A 2012 survey found that 80% of women do not report rape or sexual assault because they don't believe that the attacker would be brought to justice.
"The very nature of these offences could sometimes lead to particular barriers that may dissuade victims from reporting offences," the NCA's report reads.
Its analysis also indicated that the rise of online dating has produced a new type of sexual offender.
"These offenders are less likely to have criminal convictions, but instead exploit the ease of access and arm-chair approach to dating websites.
This is aided by potential victims not thinking of them as strangers, but someone they have got to know," the report states.
